Just reading the previouse review, i would like to say that i hope it was a one off bad day as i have eaten here quite a few times and i am on their email list.

The food is bistro/brassiere food with French influence. I am going on saturday night and will post a review next week.

My colleagues and I booked in for brunch here, and it was one of the worst meals we have ever eaten.

It took over an hour for the food to come out, and one girl did not get her croque-monsieur until the rest of us had finished and were totting up the bill. All the plates of scrambled eggs were stone-cold, as were the coffees. The croissants were obviously stale, and burned black on the bottom.

We sent them back and asked for replacements, only to be told they had run out as that was the last of the batch. Butter for the croissants and (cold) toast came out a good ten minutes after the pastries themselves, and were two matchbox-sized portions between 14 people.

The manager rather grudgingly took the croissants and the cold coffee off the bill, but offered no apology for the problem, nor for the dreadful service.

Overall I would not recommend this restaurant at all, and would certainly not visit it again.

La Bastille has had a refurb since I last went and looks great. It is much brighter and has a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. There is also a new menu which is great value with starters at £6.50 and mains at £10.95. I had the excellent house terrine followed by a proper Bouillabaisse and my partner had the moules marinieres and confit of duck - all delicious. We had the house wine, which at £9.95 was surprisingly good and tremendous value for money. The service was friendly and efficient. I was impressed and am looking forward to the business lunch I booked there and then (£8.95 for 2 courses!).

Good value food, mussels are marvelous and a great selection of bottled continental beers, had a good sirloin steak with fries and pepper sauce.

Well worth a try at lunch time as they have a menu @ £7.95

Have seen adverts for cooking demonstrations on a tuesday night?
