The White Swan

I went to The White Swan last night with a couple of friends. It's recently been revamped and looks good, but overall it's trying too hard to be something it's not.
The food was fine, but overpriced for what it was. I don't mind expensive dishes, but these were nothing particularly special and thus didn't provide good value for money. The service was friendly, though previously I have known it to be slow. On the up side, the place was pretty packed, giving it a lively atmosphere.
Overall, The White Swan appears to have a bit of an identity crisis. The food and service aren't good enough for it to be a smart restaurant, and the prices are too high for it to be a decent gastro-pub. I would suggest the management focus on simply serving good, honest, pub food, at reasonable pub prices.

Parking is a nightmare. 3 cars in separate locations in the car park had parked over 2 bays. A large black Range Rover took the space I was waiting for even though I was indicating to go in. I informed the manager about the bad parking and that I felt intimidated, but was told nothing could be done. Service was very, very slow. We had to wait 20 mins at the bar; 7 mins standing like lemons waiting to be taken to our table; 15 mins before someone came to take drinks order (we'd had to go to waitress); a futher 12 mins for drinks - eye contact was ignored on all occasioin. £10 for chicken I could have cooked at home is exorbitant - especially as veg were extra. "Frites" came with mayo and topped with what looked like orange 100s & 1000s - no mention of either on the menu. Very ordinary food typical of this chain. Would not recommend a visit - manager knew where we were sitting and knew I was upset but did not bother to visit our table.

Pretty poor much like the other pubs in the chain, slow service, cold food, really cannot cope with parties, probably ok for couples, flowery menus but in reality still a steakhouse, overpriced too. Decor is lovely though.
