Oddfellows in The Boat

Disappointing and somewhat bizaar experience. After waiting 40 minutes in the 'sub waiting room' (where there were three good cask conditioned ales on sale and excellent entertainment watching the chefs cook)we were shown to the coldest dining room at the rear with its own 500 watt halogen security light going on and off. With heating turned on, the floodlight turned off and salt and pepper finally supplied we eventually tucked into a good meal. No water offered ! and couldn't be bothered to ask for mustard to go with a great steak and jumbo chips.

The Boat is an informal bistro-style restaurant with a friendly atmosphere and superb food. After choosing your food from an enormous wall mounted blackboard, take a seat and your waitress will bring you a basket of freshly baked bread and real butter. Sadly, fewer restaurants give bread these days. The food is first rate. Cooked in an open kitchen, where the Chef will always have time to discuss your meal choice with you. From black pudding and bacon salad, though perfectly cooked scallops, to crispy belly pork or perfectly cooked fillet steaks, it's all good. The desserts are all home made too, something else that's a disappearing art in affordable restaurants! (Their panacotta is amazing!) The Proprieters are friendly and the waiting staff are all down to earth and helpful. The wine list is extensive and there are real ales on pulls. Prices are very good for the quality of the food. Well worth a visit!

A unique eating experience where the kitchen is on FULL view to visitors. No boil in the bag or microwaved rubbish here and definately no chips or french fries.
Lots of original items on the blackboard menu. Great food, friendly service and good beers.
