We went to Nathaniels in May for a special birthday celebration. Food, service and venue EXCELLENT. I have just booked to go again with friends for another birthday celebration and have just read some very negative reviews, will add new comments in September.

Went to Nathaniel's to celebrate our wedding anniversary - I wish now that we'd gone to Mr Egg in Birmingham City Centre - the food there is at least tasty, hot and doesn't pretend to be something that it isn't.
The experience: Expensive, unappetising, cramped (even though we were one of only 2 tables seated (i.e. six diners). Wine expensive - and can I recommend that if N wish to make it look as if the wine label is theirs, to remove the one beneath prior to applying their own label!
The amuse bouche (not ordered but served anyway) wa just like dishwater in flavour.
I'm not sure who was cooking that night but they clearly had committed the number one sin of not tasting the food. Either that or the chef doesn't give a 'monkey's' about their trade.
The renamed pate dish was sloppy although accompanied by a very nice chutney. Main course was too cool, lacking in flavour and despite what was said on the night, the vegetables tasted as if they had come from a frozen packet.
Dessert was disappointing ad my other half didn't eat it (VERY telling!).
We will not be recommending this pretentious and disappointing eatery to our friends and will not be returning ourselves. BTW. Latterly (post dining experience) I found out that daughter and friends had eaten there and had the same uncomfortable experience.
Not recommended.

A suprise visit from my son on Saturday prompted a decision to go out for dinner.
At such short notice we were disappointed not to be able to book a table at our favourite eaterie(s). Nathaniels was recomended and after checking reviews online we booked a table for two for eight o'clock. On arriving we discovered that there were only two other people eating there which maybe , in the event, was telling.
The welcome was friendly, though the music loud enough not to be able to hear each other with ease. The menu arrived and was stained with food and fingerprints. We ordered, the 'amuse' arrived and although was very tasty there were splashes on both the cup and saucer. This might sound picky but attention to detail really makes a huge difference. The poached duck egg was overcooked for my liking and the main course lamb was luke warm and so tough that I gave up trying to chew it and left the dish half eaten. I mentioned this to the waiter who took the plate away , made no futher refrerence to it and brought the dessert menu.
My son had rhubarb cheesecake which looked lovely, the taste and texture however did not match it's looks. Out of choice I had no dessert!
In different circumstances I would have taken issue over the matter and refused to pay , at least for the main course. I was being treated to dinner with my son . which is the reason for not taking issue on the night. We were both sorely disappointed.
We will not be eating at Nathaniels again or be recommending Nathaniels to anyone.

After walking out of another restaurant in disgust, due to their arrogance in telling us we couldn't just have a light bite as they were too busy and could fill our table with more lucrative customers, we ended up in Nathaniel's. What a contrast! The welcome and subsequent service was exceptional, the right balance between formality and friendly. After confirming that we would be able to share a starter and main, we had one of the best dining experiences I have had in Moseley in years. The seabass in a ginger and coconut sauce was just to die for, and the vegetables that accompanied it cooked to perfection. We had a duck liver pate starter, and were mulling over what wine to choose, when our waiter adroitly stepped in with a suggestion that turned out to be just right. Now the only problem is I can't seem to find that wine for sale anywhere else! By the end, I couldn't resist having dessert (just to see if the standard was maintained), and was delighted with the apple flan and calvados cream, light and tart and a perfect foil for our main. I can't recommend them enough!

After a few years of lacklustre New Years celebrations which were nothing more than an anticlimax we decided to break the mold and book a table at Nathaniels. We are regular customers and celebrate many of our anniversaries and birthdays here so we knew we were in for a treat. But I must admit Nathaniels exceeded my high expectations!
The service was pleasant and very efficient. The food was fabulous with numerous courses coming one after the other. The menu was well thought through with variety a choices complimenting each other well. For the price per head I think it represented great value for money for all the courses we had! I left absolutely stuffed having had my fill of fabulous food and wine.
Again we had a lovely evening and I must admit that I can't think of a more pleasant way to spend my New Years next year.

I simply cannot believe that this is the same restaurant that we celebrated our anniversary in last week. Having eaten here on a number of occasions I can say that this is a fine restaurant with fantastic service and very reasonable prices, so much so that tonight we have booked for new years eve - whilst perusing the menu for the booking we were treated to a beautiful glass of cabernet sauvignon on the house. They really value our custom and I would highly recommend this restaurant whilst saying that you avoid Emma at your peril, not Nathaniel's.

I was just googling Nathaniel's in Moseley to see if they are open on Monday nights as I wish to make a reservation but I found these reviews. I am shocked at the comment from Emma.
I hired the resturant for my hen do on 25 August 2007 and it was amazing. About 16 of us descended on the resturant and you would have thought we were royalty. Service was wonderful even though we were loud and giggly. The food was fantastic, everyone of my guests said they had a great meal. Great tastes, great quality and cooked to perfection.
My friends had decorated the table but the decor of the resturant is stylish and warm anyway.
I can not recommend this place enough. I only wish I had apologised to the couple who had a table at the back of the room for our noise!!
I had such a great time hence why I wish to take my husband for his birthday on Monday.

well i can understand many of the other comments however i am not sure the comments by Emma were of the same place my family and i went to.
the whole experience was one i would expect from a small but perfect little restaurant.
we all had meals that were to our high expectations and at a price we were willing to pay.
keep up the good work.

As a simple black country boy I am always wary at eating out in Birmingham. I was invited out to eat at Nathaniels with a party of 6.What a find, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming the food excellent and a very enticing menu selection. Neighbouring table contained Canadians who were on business in the area and they were delighted with the venue as well.Like Arny 'I'll be back!'

You have to question the reputation of a place when you phone to make a reservation at 6pm on a Friday night, and get in, two hours later - once you arrive you see 4 vacant tables out of 7!!
We went to Nathaniel's on a recommendation by a number of people. We were sorely disappointed.
Upon entering, we were greeted with painful dance music played so loudly that we couldn't hear the Maitre D. To his credit, once asked to turn the music down, he did so with no objection. He swopped music for some calmer sounds but frankly, if I'd have wanted to listen to music I would have gone to a gig.
The menu looked promising, if a little uninspired.
I ordered what transpired to be a Tuna Carpaccio, but was listed on the menu as Seared Tuna. My partner had a tomato tart without any filling. Not sure whether that was an oversight or just 'house style', whatever, it didn't work!
The mains were fairly indifferent. A simple poussin we cook regularly and with more thought and that's just for the relatives on a Sunday! We can't remember what else we had, so non-descript were the dishes.
The place lacked atmosphere, asides from a romantic ( and some may say, foolhardy) pair opposite us, the place was empty by 9.30pm. Quite unheard of, in Moseley on a Friday night.
I had high expectations for Nathaniels, given Brum's lack of innovative restaurants, but we were very disappointed. I would be happy to pay Nathaniel's prices but when it comes to charging London prices for something that you get in a London pub for £9, well, maybe they need Gordon Ramsey to pop along and demonstrate some cost cutting.
Go at your peril!
