We went to Nathaniels last night to have a romantic meal, I was slightly worried about some negative comments i'd read but I needn't have been. It's a small restaurant which has a warm, intimate ambiance. The tables are far enough apart and the music at just the right level to have a private conversation. The staff were friendly and helpful though we were 15 minutes late due to our taxi. We received the complementary amuse bouse which was broccoli and very nice. I had rib eye steak which was cooked beautifully (medium rare) in a flavoursome jus. My husband had an aubergine bake vegetarien option which was also tasty, both came with plenty of veg. We weren't rushed at all by the staff though there were customers waiting for tables. For 2 mains and 2 glasses of wine it was a very reasonable £35 considering the quality, we had a wonderful time and will definately be going back.

Although we run a pub in Kent, we regularly visit Birmingham on business and to visit family. We always make an effort to eat at Nathaniel's as every time we have the food has been exceptional, and a third of what we would pay locally for the same calibre meal.

In our opinion, and comparing with our local accredited restaurants, it amazes methat he has not been awarded a Michelin Star.

Emma obviously has eaten in a different restaurant to the one we have regularly used.

Enjoyable meal on a Firiday night. The pork ravioli starter was fantastic. The lamb main course was cooked perfectly and the sauce was good.

We went at 7.30 and it was a bit quiet, but there were many more people there by the time we left.

Five of us visited on 7 May 2009 and had a lovely meal. Being a Thursday evening it was not full but was about 70%. Our monkfish was delicious, lamb was perfectly cooked, all the sauces were tasty. An enjoyable birthday meal.

Perhaps the menus could be pristine and printed off daily?

We visited Nathaniels on a busy saturday night and received nothing by way of a welcome and had to chivvy the waiters to order our drinks. Complimentary amuse bouche arrived of veg soup was good. Starters advertised with wild mushrooms arrived with button mushrooms so not overly happy with that. Main courses were a disaster - two monkfish courses had parts of the fish that were inedibly high, the lamb was overcooked and dry and the cod was overcooked and the colour of fillet steak ! We complained and two mains were deducted from the bill. Comes to something when the amuse bouche is the best course in a restaurant.

Certainly did not want to accept Nathaniels offer of a complimentary meal and the worst meal we have had in ages and this includes a recent trip to india.

To sum up : lacking in atmosphere; slow service and very second rate ill-described food so not recommended

Went to Nathaniel's to celebrate our wedding anniversary - I wish now that we'd gone to Mr Egg in Birmingham City Centre - the food there is at least tasty, hot and doesn't pretend to be something that it isn't.

The experience: Expensive, unappetising, cramped (even though we were one of only 2 tables seated (i.e. six diners). Wine expensive - and can I recommend that if N wish to make it look as if the wine label is theirs, to remove the one beneath prior to applying their own label!

The amuse bouche (not ordered but served anyway) wa just like dishwater in flavour.

I'm not sure who was cooking that night but they clearly had committed the number one sin of not tasting the food. Either that or the chef doesn't give a 'monkey's' about their trade.

The renamed pate dish was sloppy although accompanied by a very nice chutney. Main course was too cool, lacking in flavour and despite what was said on the night, the vegetables tasted as if they had come from a frozen packet.

Dessert was disappointing ad my other half didn't eat it (VERY telling!).

We will not be recommending this pretentious and disappointing eatery to our friends and will not be returning ourselves. BTW. Latterly (post dining experience) I found out that daughter and friends had eaten there and had the same uncomfortable experience.

Not recommended.

A suprise visit from my son on Saturday prompted a decision to go out for dinner.

At such short notice we were disappointed not to be able to book a table at our favourite eaterie(s). Nathaniels was recomended and after checking reviews online we booked a table for two for eight o'clock. On arriving we discovered that there were only two other people eating there which maybe , in the event, was telling.

The welcome was friendly, though the music loud enough not to be able to hear each other with ease. The menu arrived and was stained with food and fingerprints. We ordered, the 'amuse' arrived and although was very tasty there were splashes on both the cup and saucer. This might sound picky but attention to detail really makes a huge difference. The poached duck egg was overcooked for my liking and the main course lamb was luke warm and so tough that I gave up trying to chew it and left the dish half eaten. I mentioned this to the waiter who took the plate away , made no futher refrerence to it and brought the dessert menu.

My son had rhubarb cheesecake which looked lovely, the taste and texture however did not match it's looks. Out of choice I had no dessert!

In different circumstances I would have taken issue over the matter and refused to pay , at least for the main course. I was being treated to dinner with my son . which is the reason for not taking issue on the night. We were both sorely disappointed.

We will not be eating at Nathaniels again or be recommending Nathaniels to anyone.

After walking out of another restaurant in disgust, due to their arrogance in telling us we couldn't just have a light bite as they were too busy and could fill our table with more lucrative customers, we ended up in Nathaniel's. What a contrast! The welcome and subsequent service was exceptional, the right balance between formality and friendly. After confirming that we would be able to share a starter and main, we had one of the best dining experiences I have had in Moseley in years. The seabass in a ginger and coconut sauce was just to die for, and the vegetables that accompanied it cooked to perfection. We had a duck liver pate starter, and were mulling over what wine to choose, when our waiter adroitly stepped in with a suggestion that turned out to be just right. Now the only problem is I can't seem to find that wine for sale anywhere else! By the end, I couldn't resist having dessert (just to see if the standard was maintained), and was delighted with the apple flan and calvados cream, light and tart and a perfect foil for our main. I can't recommend them enough!
