what the critics say

Guardian

Matthew Norman - 8.75/10

Saturday, July 28, 2007 - Saka's talent was confirmed by a dish of his own invention which, for Italianate reasoning that remains opaque, he calls murgh aur masala ki milan: a sharp, piquant and spectacularly good chicken in another beautifully spiced gravy. Deep-fried okra was pointless, but sizzling shallots with chilli was as sparkling a side dish as I've eaten in a long time.

We had the lunchtime tapas.

Food was excellent while service poor.

I wholly agree with most of the negative reviews. I ate here a few weeks ago and I was spoken to very rudely by a waiter when my girlfriend asked him about a particular dish. I had to firmly ask him to watch his manners as we were paying guests and were not going to pay £10 for a curry to be spoken to like that. From then on the service was clearly stroppy, with the food late and no care whatsoever. Restaurants are not just about food, but service as well. The flash owners need to understand this. Anyway, the food was poor and 5 minutes into the main we stopped, paid, left and told the manager what we thought and headed off to Ladypool road!!

This USED to be one of my favourite restaurants as the food is quite good although it is overly priced. Unfortunately, I will NOT be going back again. I booked a table for a birthday meal and could not be 100% sure of the numbers because it was during Ramadhan and it was proving difficult for some of my friends to commit completely. After many long and painful conversations with the incredibly rude manager, we finally booked a table for 12 and when due to unforeseen circumstances, only 7 of my friends could make it, the manager and some of the waiting staff treated us all with incredible disrespect. Drinks orders were taken and not brought to us, we were ignored by the staff on many occasions and to top it all, as I left the restaurant, the manager had the audacity to have a go at me! I am a business woman myself and believe me, if I spoke to my clients and treated them in the way I was treated my business would not last 5 minutes. I think the manager needs some strong lessons in etiquette and how to excell in customer service!

Arrogant rude staff & bland food. Small portions. We ordered a chicken dish described as chunks of breast off the bone, only to be served two chicken drumsticks in a sauce! Also they added on a bottle of white wine to our bill which we did not have! After pointing this out the waiter went off in a huff to change the bill with no apology whatsoever. Bill for 2 people with a couple of beers was almost £80!! Will NEVER eat there again; I have no idea who writes the reviews in the press!

I booked a table last Saturday for a large group. We got there a bit late but as soon as we got there we were near enough pushed to table and told to order straight away becasue it takes a long time for the chef to make the food!!!.

We did not get a welcome at all. Anyway we ordered a mix of everything and ordered some things for the kids.We asked to waiter about 6 times that we had some orders missing and finally it came after the kids had finished eating. No apoligies just a grin to say " oh well". We were given our bill while we were still eating and didn't even get chance to order a desert.

Basically they wanted us out as quickly as possible so they could get more customers in after us. I hate Resturants that rush you and this place certainly does.

Will not be going here again. All the staff look flippin miserable!!!

The food is fine but nothing special at all, the decor however is much better than most restuarts.I feel the staff look down at some of there customers means judging them as they walk in. (lucky for me I have nice car)

the price is VERY VERY HIGH I have a succesful business and can afford to eat eanywhere however these guys are just taking advantage. Just for that reason my wife would nt let me take her there.

I FEEL THE FOOD & SERVICE IS 30% TOO HIGH BEST AVOIDED.

i agree with the above opion. I have eaten here twice and heard loads about the amazing decour and atmosphere, but on our last visit ended up feeling self conciousness by being stared at through out our meal, my husbund had to ask the waiters to move away as i felt so intimidated. The food is ok, but nothing that i have not had several times over in mosely or sparkbrook, so am i paying for the decor? We asked the food to be mildly spiced even though both my husbund and i are of asian descent we dont like the food very hot, but were taken aback by the response which was what was wrong with our tatste buds?

unfortunatley over priced, average menu, and rude staff

The first few times I had tried to go to this restaurant, I was told they were busy, but could see plenty of empty tables which didn't appear to be reserved. The third time a couple walked in before me and advised they hadn't reserved but were shown in. When my husband and I were attended to, we were told they only accept guests who have reserved! We told them what we thought and left.

Being persistent, I finally made it inside the restaurant after we reserved a few months later. That was a big mistake. Food was not authentic, staff were slow and discourteous (staring at us as we ate) and seemed to want us out of there so they could seat new customers at our table (even though there were so many spare tables).

If these people can't even greet customers politely, its no wonder they were so terrible inside Looking at the menu as well I can see they are making a hefty profit from those who are unfortunate enough to dine there. There are so many good indian restaurants in Birmingham, including two on the same road as this one. Be wise and go to one of them - as they at least won't disappoint.

Must say the food was good, I did enjoy it very much.

But the service has got to be the worst I’ve got from any eatery of that standard!

They assumed I was an Indian by the colour of my skin and started talking to me in a language I barely understood, as I am of a Bangladeshi ethnic background.

They told me I had personally order too much and had to explain I have a healthy apatite.

There were eight of us totalling a bill of £268.22, including a service charge of £19.87.

Half the menu is over priced having considered the location, the quality of the restaurant, I mean two pieces of king prawn £9.95, that’s 80% profit right there!

Anyway soon as we had asked for the bill they couldn't wait to get us out!! Persistently coming over asking if we had got the money together then telling us we had to pay out the bar as they had customers. Clearly that was a lie as there was only a couple waiting in the bar area with plenty tables available on the main floor.

The first time I had similar experience but I brushed it off and thought I’d give them a second chance; I will not be going there again!!

Next time… there won’t be a next time!!!
