Metro

Metro - 5/5

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - It's been a juddery start for The Vaults. When Metro reviewed it shortly after its launch, we were irritated by its slap-dash attitude, the chef's 'supplier problems' and an ineptly cooked side order of vegetables. But that was nine months ago and, after a period of uncertainty, we noticed with interest the arrival of a new head chef. Sean Kyle was on Raymond Blanc's team at Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons, and also at Bank, so we thought he might know a thing or two about cooking vegetables. His new menu is upmarket brasserie fare; ambitious but not scarily pretentious.

We booked well in advance on a "2 for £30" offer for valentines. It was clearly confirmed that we were ok to book under this offer, however when the bill came we were stung at £27.50 a head, plus a service charge they had sneakily slipped in for a meal for 2, plus we were belittled and made to feel stupid when this was pointed out to them, before being told there was no record of our booking despite being called a few day prior to the meal to re-confirm!

The food was ok but no better, and portions were tiny (I got takeway after a 3 course meal!). With the choice of other restaurants in Birmingham, I would definitely recommend giving this a miss!

1 out of 10.

We had booked well in advance for lunch Christmas Eve. As vegetarians, I was impressed that they did not assume that we wanted to eat pasta as the veggie option. I had double-checked that the French Onion Soup on the Christmas menu would be replaced by a vegetarian white onion soup - and this was duly noted in their diary.

However when we arrived, we were told that there was no soup at all available. (How can a restaurant run out of onions?) We were offered alternative starters from the a la carte menu at no extra cost.

Then we had opted for a mixed bean cassoulet in a filo pastry parcel. This came without the filo pastry.... as they had run out. It did taste delicious but was bit insubstantial, especially as the potato and veggie side dishes were not supplied with this option (although the menu seemed to indicate clearly that they would be.)

On to the puddings. Fine.

Coffee and mince pies - mince pies miniature, obviously bought in from an industrial supplier, still in their foil cases.

This would overall have been a rather miserable experience had it not been for the very pleasant, friendly and helpful waiter, whom I felt really sorry for - we didn't make a fuss, but others in our situation might well have done. By the time we left just before 4 o' clock he seemed to have been left entirely on his own.

Oh - and no soap in the loos.

All in all not an experience I would wish to repeat - not god value for money.
